Limited toilets in Mkhancwa

Mkhancwa - Residents of the Mkhancwa informal settlement have to share toilets with their neighbours.

The municipality delivered mobile toilets to the area earlier this year, and resident Martha Maphiliba (32) says the situation is dangerous.

“Strangers who pass through are using our toilets because they know we all share,” she says.

Another resident Zanele Maseko (29) says each family should have their own toilet, which they can then properly maintain.

Ward 74 councillor George Vilakazi says the metro provided temporary sanitation because the land on which the informal settlement is situated, is privately owned.

He says until the metro can find alternative land, residents need to look after the toilets.
