EMPD set their sights on illegal liquor outlets

KwaThema - EMPD By-Law Unit members and Liquor Board officials targeted illegal liquor outlets during a special operation in KwaThema and Springs on Saturday.

The operation, which started at 5pm and ended at around 11pm, also targeted outlets not complying with conditions stipulated in their permits.

EMPD spokesperson Chief Suprt Wilfred Kgasago says three outlets were found to be in violation of their permits and one was found to be operating without a licence.

“A pub in Wright Park was instructed to remove the gigantic speakers from the establishment as they are a source of unbearable noise to the neighbours, and was summoned to appear at the Liquor Board offices to verify its dubious permit,” says Kgasago

He says a butchery in Tornado Section, KwaThema, was caught selling liquor illegally.

Liquor to the value of approximately R5 000 was found concealed under some meat.

According to Kgasago, the matter has been referred to the Environmental Health Department, which might be compelled to review the butchery’s licence.

Due to complaints of public disturbance, a private house in Mmekoa Street, KwaThema, with a valid liquor licence, was instructed to remove its huge speakers.

Another house situated along Nkosi Street, from where liquor is legally sold, was also warned not to create a disturbance with loud music.

Kgasago says they will be periodically monitoring the outlets to ensure they fully comply with the conditions of their permits.

“Failure by the outlets not to keep the noise at reasonable levels will result in the confiscation of music equipment,” he says.

Management of the pub in Wright Park deny their speakers were confiscated and say their permit is valid.
