Alleged mismanagement of funds leads to protest

Geluksdal - Staff from the Geluksdal Child Welfare Society in Richard Myburgh Street protested on Monday morning, following claims of financial mismanagement at the organisation.

Staff claim that management misuse funds which results in them not being able to do their jobs.

It is alleged the organisation doesn’t have an active bank account.

Lydia Makhanya (40), an auxiliary social worker, claims staff are unable to complete their daily tasks because there is no stationery in the office.

“The company vehicle never has petrol, so we have to use alternative transport,” says Makhanya.

Staff have allegedly been complaining about these issues since last year, but their complaints have fallen on deaf ears.

Workers also claim they haven’t received their salaries in a month.

Social worker Paul Mofokeng (37) claims the organisation doesn’t even have a cleaner and staff clean the premises.

“We are tired of working in such appalling conditions, management has to account for this and let us know where the funds are we receive from the Department of Social Development,” says Mofokeng.

The SAPS monitored the protest.

Spokesperson of the Department of Social Development, Thebe Mohatle, says the matter is still being investigated.
