John Dube volunteers receive gardening tools

Duduza - Last Thursday the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) donated gardening tools to volunteers of John Dube.

Unemployed residents saw the need to take action to combat poverty and unemployment.

They started off by cleaning the streets of John Dube and then embarked on a gardening project.

Volunteers expressed how difficult it was to clean and tend to the gardens with limited tools.

Nomxolisi Sithole (35) volunteered because she was unemployed and wanted to make a difference in her community.

“I encouraged my neighbours and family who are unemployed to come join the project,”says Sithole.

The high rate of unemployment and poverty in John Dube has pushed residents to use their free time productively.

Volunteers are aged between 20 to 65 years.

Solomon Hiya (64) wants to see the young people of John Dube more involved in community projects and stop involving themselves in criminal activities.

“We all work together in the streets and in the garden, there is no young or old,” says Hiya.

All the vegetables produced from the gardens will be given to poor households and the remaining will be divided amongst the volunteers.
