‘I want my RDP house back’

Duduza - When Robert Mzikayafane Mohali registered for a RDP house back in 2000, he never thought he would still be renting 15 years later.

While waiting for his house, Mohali (43) left his family home in Tsakane to rent a house in Duduza, with his girlfriend.

It came as a shock when he was handed the keys to his new home, and found somebody else already living there.

He reported the problem to Silas Letsimo, councillor for ward 84, who confirmed that Mohali is the lawful owner of the residence.

Mohali also presented the documents proving ownership to the African Reporter.

Frustrated, Mohali eventually turned to the police for help, and opened a case of trespassing.

The case is still pending, but despite all of this, the illegal occupant remains in his house.

This has affected Mohali financially because he spends the little money he makes from his tuck shop on rent.

Mohali alleges the man occupying his house is performing witchcraft on him, so he can keep the house.

“I no longer set foot in that yard because when I go there, I get extremely sick,” says Mohali.

All he wants is for the man to leave his house so his family can have a place to call home.

Letsimo says he is aware there are huge issues regarding houses in Extension 19.

“We are working hand in hand with the Department of Housing to try and sort out the problem,” he says.
