Safety for our children

Kwatsaduza -The national Child Protection Week campaign was started in 1997 to raise awareness of children's rights.

The aim of this initiative is to ensure the safety, well being, care and protection of children across South Africa.

It is a known fact that many children’s rights are violated on a daily basis.

Children are abused and harassed by strangers and people they trust.

It is imperative for parents and educators to teach children about safety.

It is therefore the responsibility of the community to make sure children live in a safe environment.

Children have rights as stipulated in Article 28 of the South African Constitution.

The levels of violence in local communities is alarming and indicates that children are at a higher risk of being taken advantage of.

Sgt Lebohang Ramaesa from the Tsakane police emphasises that parents should play an active role in keeping their children safe at all times.

“It’s every parent’s responsibility to secure a safe environment for their children,” says Ramaesa.

The fight to secure the safety of children is an ongoing process, especially with poverty on the rise.
