RDP house yet to be repaired

KwaThema - The RDP house belonging to Joana Selwane is yet to be repaired after it was damaged by heavy winds in January.

The story of Selwane was featured in the African Reporter’s January 23 edition, ‘Heavy winds blow RDP house down’, where it was reported Selwane’s house was badly damaged in a storm.

Selwane pleaded for assistance as she has nowhere else to go.

At the time, metro spokesman Themba Gadebe said a temporary structure (shack) had been erected within the yard to be occupied by the family while arrangements were considered to repair the house.

Gadebe concluded the metro was in the process of confirming if the residents of the house were registered as indigents with council.

Five months later, Selwane is still living in the damaged house.

While a shack was indeed erected on her property, it was built in a waterlogged area, and Selwane has never lived in it.

She fears for her life and the safety of her belongings, as the shack has no windows and the door does not lock property.

Selwane claims she has not heard from the metro nor the ward councillor since February, regarding a solution to help her.

Ward councillor Ivy Nkosi says she is still trying to resolve the problem.

According to her, Selwane is currently not registered an an indigent with council.

In addition, the property has three outside rooms from which Selwane earns an income.

Nkosi says this will make it difficult when the house is evaluated.

Comment requested from the metro had not been received at the time of going to print.
