Drug free world SA talks to youth about drugs

Tsakane - More than 50 young people from Kwatsaduza learnt about drug and substance abuse at an education session on Monday.

The session was held at the Tsakane Clinic and presented by Drug Free World SA.

Organised by the Tsakane Youth Development Programme (TYDP), the session was aimed at ensuring the youth have information on the symptoms displayed by drugs addicts, while also providing information about the consequences of drugs.

Carmen Margro from Drug Free World SA says the organisation aims to prevent young people from getting addicted by educating volunteers who will educate others about the consequences drug use.

She says the organisation also motivates young people to avoid turning to drugs because of the challenges they face.

“Some became addicts in an attempt to forget about their problems,” says Margro.

She says the organisation also aims to educate parents and children about drugs.

Pule Moloi, managing director of the TYDP, says the information shared at the session will also help the TYDP spread the word about drug abuse to the youth of Kwatsaduza.

“It is our wish to ensure drug-free communities,” says Moloi.

Moloi says his organisation is always open to help addicts who are willing to quit drugs and live a normal life.

One of the young people who attended the session, Zandile Mkhwanazi (26), feels she has a responsibility to fight drugs in the area in which she lives.

“I learnt that the fight against drugs starts with one community member and the involvement of police,” says Mkhwanazi.

She concludes by promising to share the information with friends and family.
