Angry mob assault attempted robbery and murder suspect

KwaThema - Two people were hospitalised following an attempted business robbery on Friday.

It is alleged that four men, aged between 30 and 38 years old, tried to rob a tuck shop along Madjatjie Street at 8.15am.

Springs police spokesman Capt Johannes Ramphora says the suspects stormed into the shop and demanded cash from the owner.

One of the robbers, who was armed with a firearm, fired several shots into the air in an attempt to scare the shop’s owner.

“A 37-year-old woman from the area, who heard the shooting and went outside to investigate, was shot in the leg,” says Ramphora.

The robbers were forced to flee the scene empty-handed, but were pursued by angry community members.

Three of the men managed to escape in a white VW Golf, while one was caught hiding under a bed in a nearby house.

The man was assaulted by the angry crowd and rescued by police when they arrived at the scene.

The suspect was severely injured and taken to Pholosong Hospital.

The woman who sustained a gunshot wound was also taken to Pholosong.
