The two fire stations being built in Kwatsaduza have still not been completed and residents are wondering whether the new due dates will be met.

The African Reporter published an article on February 6, about the Duduza and KwaThema Fire Stations.

Ward 98’s Clr Nthathane Mabena said, in the article, that the fire stations were long overdue, as they were supposed to be completed last year, and explained that the delay was due to problems during the construction and the previous contractors’ contracts being terminated.

She added that new contractors were appointed early this year and that construction of the fire stations was again underway.

Community member Nkosana Buthelezi says he is excited about the two fire stations in Kwatsaduza but does not see both of them being completed by the promised times.

Media liaison officer for DEMS,William Ntladi, says if there are no adverse weather conditions and other challenges the Duduza Fire Station is anticipated to be completed around June, while the KwaThema Fire Station should be ready in October.

Ntladi adds that members of the community can enrol with a training institution, to acquire the relevant qualifications for the Emergency Services career path and to be considered for employment at the fire stations.

“The new firefighters will be be mixed with the experienced fire fighters for quality service delivery purposes,” he says.

The opening dates for both fire station will be published through relevant communication mediums around the city of Ekurhuleni.

In conclusion, Ntladi says the response time will highly improve service to the community as a whole.
