Vegetable garden awaits funding

KwaThema - Members of the Leratong Vegetable Garden Project have allegedly not yet received their winnings from a competition held in 2008.

The vegetable garden is situated at the corner of Marule and Lentle streets, in Rest In Peace, and was started to empower the community.

While vegetables are still being planted in the garden, the project requires funding.

There is a shortage of equipment and an irrigation system is needed to water the plants.

According to Thomas Kubeka (82), members participated in a competition facilitated by the Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Environment, and won R25 000.

Kubeka claims the winnings are in ward 80 councillor Dora Mlambo’s bank account.

He alleges Mlambo was the one who instructed the project’s members to apply for the money to be released, but they are yet to receive the amount.

Responding to the allegations, Mlambo says the members were awarded the prize amount by the Bontle Ke Botho Project, which was being facilitated by the provincial department.

She adds the amount was put into the Ekurhuleni Metro’s account, and not her own.

In her conclusion she says there will be a meeting with the members soon where officials will attempt to resolve the issue.
