New illegal dumping site in KwaThema

There is a new illegal dumping hotspot in KwaThema.

Mounds of rubbish can be found next to Thema Road, in front of Ntokozweni Primary School.

Resident Ziphozonke Khumalo, who lives in Mayetane Street near the illegal dumping site, says he can no longer stand the smell.

Khumalo explains the area was previously cleaned by the municipality, but residents still litter.

“In the past, when the waste truck would skip schedule, the site would be packed with litter, but now even when the truck comes according to schedule, residents still litter,” says Khumalo.

Another resident, Mthobisi Mabena, says he feels the community is not aware that if their bins are full they can contact the Kwathema Customer Care Centre to collect their rubbish.

Ward 79 councillor Ivy Nkosi says she is aware of the illegal dumping site and reported the matter to the Department of Waste last week.

Nkosi says the community must learn to contact the KwaThema Customer Care Centre when their bins are full.

She adds the illegal dumping site is a health threat to the community as it is in front of a school.
