Geluksdal housing protest

Residents of Geluksdal Extension Three were protesting in numbers in Geluksdal Road on Wednesday.

According to Tsakane Police Station spokesperson, Captain Petrus Mabuza, the protest began in the early hours of the morning after residents received eviction notices from the Department of Housing and Human Settlements.

Mabuza explains that after police negotiated with the protesters, the group went to the Tsakane Customer Centre to hand over a memorandum.

Resident Thuli Mabaso says she has been living in the area for 10 years, received an eviction notice last week.

Mabaso explains the government needs to relocate them to a different region before evicting them.

Another resident Busi Mbonane says she has nowhere else to go as she has been living in the area for five years.

Mbonane says she does not understand why the department is removing them as most of the people living in the area have no title deeds
