Sewage problem in KwaThema’s hostel
Residents of the KwaThema Hostel, Block E, have been living with sewage in their yards for the last two months.
According to resident Zanele Khumalo, the cover of the manhole situated in front of her house popped up in the beginning of February, and immediately there was sewage in the entire yard of the block.
Khumalo explains the municipality tried to fix the problem mid-February and promised to come again the following week, but never did.”I have reported the matter to the KwaThema Customer Care Centre on several occasions, but the matter is still unresolved” she says.
Khumalo complains there are children in the area who inhale the unbearable smell , and fears the sewage may lead to a disease outbreak in the area.
Resident Precious Nonyana says she cannot sleep at night as the stench becomes worse during the evenings.
Nonyana adds she also reported the matter to the Kwathema Customer Care Centre, but nothing has been done.
Ward 78 councillor Thoko Gadebe says she is fully aware of the situation as she visited the hostel last week Friday.
She adds that all the problems that were identified have been reported and will be resolved as soon as possible.
