Khangezile Primary School goes green

Oxfam, in partnership with Earthlife Africa and Gender and Climate Change Southern Africa, launched the sustainable use of natural resources women's initiative at Khangezile Primary School last Friday.

According to the European Union (EU) co-ordinator at Oxfam Kudzanai Chakanza, the EU funded the project for disadvantaged communities who are most affected by climate change because of their reliance on natural resources for their survival.

“Women from Kwatsaduza will receive training to supplement their knowledge of sustainable farming practices which will enable them to increase their crop yield, feed their families and sell produce for extra income,” says Chakanza.

Chakanza adds the biogas digestor and solar PV units that have been installed at the school will convert the sun’s energy to electricity for immediate use or future use.

According to Chakanza a biogas digester turns organic waste including manure and human waste to methane gas which is a new renewable energy source used for cooking, heating and lighting.

Member of the Community Working Group, Alice Dhladhla says she hopes the project is a success so they can work towards alleviating poverty and bringing down electricity bills.

Ward Councillor Ivy Nkosi says this is project is a path for women suffering with substance abuse to acquire entrepreneurial skills.
