No preferential treatment in Meyiwa case – Phiyega

Police commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS) Riah Phiyega said no preferential treatment has been given to the case of Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa.

Phiyega was talking during a media and police briefing on the late shot-stopper’s death.

Meyiwa was shot dead in Vosloorus at his pop star girlfriend Kelly Khumalo’s home, when two men entered Khumalo’s home on Sunday evening, October 26.

“There have been numerous instances where rewards had also been offered. Look at the two murder cases in Reiger Park, and there’s also two others in Diepsloot.”

Meanwhile, Gauteng detective unit head Maj-Gen Norman Taioe sought to clarify widespread belief that the Bafana star was specifically targeted in a contract murder.

“Senzo and his friends were leaving the house when the two (attackers) entered the house. One of the attackers bumped into the first friend and a scuffle ensued,” said Taioe.

Taioe added that the attackers demanded cellphones and money, before quashing rumours that the crime was a hit on Meyiwa.

“We do not have evidence which suggests that this was a contract killing or a hit on Mr Meyiwa. There was no gun aimed specifically at him.”

He said there were seven people inside the house at the time of the crime. One shot was fired inside the house, and two more were fired randomly outside.

An armed robbery and murder case was opened.

A multi-disciplinary task team made up of forensic, crime intelligence, and visible policing members have been assembled to handle the case.
