The Department of Health held a road safety campaign at the Springs Taxi Rank on Wednesday.

Prince Hamnca, spokesman for the department says, this is done to embark on the safety on the road through healthy lifestyle.

The aim of the campaign is to alert drivers and commuters to health conditions that can lead to road fatalities.

He says they also want to highlight the importance of regular medical check-ups especially before embarking on long trips.

As part of prevention of injuries and non-natural deaths, the directorate of Clinical Forensic Medical Services worked closely with the Gauteng Taxi Council, the Department of Community Safety management, the Ekurhuleni Emergency Services and disaster management in endeavour to educate taxi drivers.

There were stalls, a mobile dental clinic, demonstration on safety tips and the screening of lifestyle deceases.

Lesego Masilo, spokesman for the department’s forensic medical services, says, they tested people for high blood pressure and their blood sugar levels.

Sister Cecilia Alexander and her staff from the Far East Rand Hospital were also helping out with these tests.

“This campaign is held all over Gauteng and they hope their aim to alert drivers is fruitful,” says Lesego.
