Residents dump anywhere in KwaThema

The illegal dumping sites around the township seem to have been the best grazing field for the goats in KwaThema.

The filthiness is found at the street corners, open velds and between the houses in the township.

The most affected residents of such an act are those living next to the open velds that have been turned to illegal dumping sites.

Residents dump dead dogs, old nappies, clothes and rotten vegetables and the smell from these sites is unbearable.

One of the shocking illegal dumping sites is situated under the bridge next to shaft five old mine at Kgaswane Street.

The site is full of different animal bones that are blocking the free flow of water.

However, the area seems to be one of the favourite spots for goats as they run to cross the road from Joe Mzamane Street to the illegal dumping site.

KwaThema Customer Care Centre manager, Andries Nkabinde believes that the illegal dumping is one of the contributing factors to the problem of rats in many townships.

“Rats come from the illegal dumping sites to cause a mess in our homes,” said Nkabinde.

He appealed to KwaThema residents not to dump illegally but to call the metro should they have waste equal to 1ton.

Nkabinde explained that if one is seen dumping illegally, the metro will demand a fine from that person.

“The community needs to take responsibility for the cleanliness of the area where they live,” Nkabinde concluded.
