Debate and poetry in Duduza

Dissecting issues that matter

Are young people using social networks effectively, or is it just a distraction?

This is the topic debated on Saturday by learners of NN Ndebele High School and Tandi Sibeko Secondary School. They participated in the first Duduza High Schools’ Debate, Poetry and Literacy competition, held at the Resource Centre, in Nala Street.

NN Ndebele represented by Nelisiwe Mntungwa, Sanele Twala (chairperson) and Gift Sithebe argued that social networks were disruptive to young people and won the debate.

Sexting was identified by the learners as one of the problems.

“Negative feedback which often results from people posting inappropriate photos and massages destroys many lives,” explained Nelisiwe.

The event was hosted by Unlimited media.

One of the founders, Esau Dlamini, said their focus is on community development, especially young people in the arts.

“Our aim is to promote the culture of reading and writing as a way of discouraging young people from abusing drugs, said Esau.

Aser Maloka and MOM Seboni High School won their debates tackling the questions, “Should dagga be legalised?” and “Should corporal punishment be brought back into schools?”

Motivations were shared through public speaking, while poets tackled issues affecting communities.

Local dancers and music performers entertained the crowed which had filled the hall.
