Tombstone found in residential area

Are you missing a tombstone?

It was an unusual day at the office for KwaThema police, when they responded to a call to come and collect a tombstone.

The home owner who wishes to remain anonymous says on the morning of March 11, she casually walked outside her house to collect her mail when she made the startling discovery.

“My first thought was to take the tombstone and throw it away, but was afraid of leaving fingerprints and having me and my family become suspects if the police find it and open a case,” explained the home owner.

KwaThema police captain Mandla Phori says the family from KwaThema reported that they found the tombstone in their yard last month and contacted the police.

The tombstone is engraved with, “Pretty Mabena, born in 1979 and died in 1980.

“The captain says since they don’t know where the tombstone was taken or stolen, they can’t open a case of, violation of a grave.

“We appeal to the community with any information which might shed light in this case to come to the station or call 011 812 4600.

“The captain said relatives who want to claim the tombstone must bring proof of identification.
