Parents demand a better school

Parents of children attending Menzi Primary School in Langaville marched to the department of education district offices last Wednesday.

They left their daily work to ensure that their voices are heard by the officials from the department.

Freddie Malongwe, one of the concerned parents, said they are tired of the situation that their children are forced to learn under.

He said the shacks that are used as classrooms are now not in a good condition.

“The doors and windows are broken in some of the classrooms and when it rains, children suffer as the majority of these classrooms are leaking,” said Malongwe.

Adding that they are tired of the department promising them a new permanent school structure which has been ongoing since 2009 and nothing has happened yet.

Speaking on behalf of the Gauteng Department of Education, Phumla Sekhonyane said the construction of a brick and mortar school is budgeted for in the 2014/15 financial year.

“The department has taken note of concerns regarding maintenance work at the school and will send inspectors to make an assessment of the extent of interim maintenance needed,” said Sekhonyane.

Sekhonyane concludes that a contractor will then be appointed to do those repairs.
