Computer and Abet training for the blind
Emmanuel Blind Spot launched their Abet and computer centre in KwaThema last Friday.
The organisation which advocates for visually impaired people has ten computer students, eight of them totally blind and 25 Abet students and only two have partial sight.
Orapeleng Segwabe will facilitate the computer course which runs for six months. He is also blind and will use his training and experience from his previous job as facilitator to, “teach MS Word, Email, Internet and general computer.”
The Abet, level four group will write their exams in October.
Mpostoli Mndebele, who heads the organisation, had some strong words for those with bad intentions “people have temporary abled bodies, don’t come steal our equipment because we are doing this for the community, and you might need this centre tomorrow.”
Mpostoli said grant money is not enough and people need skills to make a living for themselves.
He concluded by saying that, “my vision is to see this organisation spread to other provinces.”
The Department of Education was represented by Nthabiseng Ngwenya who works in the adult education and training.
She said Abet training is important because ‘we all have a right to learn, regardless of race, age or disability’.
Nthabiseng appeals to blind people in the community to approach the centre as they will be working with them ‘we have programs for blind people,’ she said.
