Kwa-Thema comedian who beat cancer shares stage with big artists

“It was November 2009 when I walked into a Comedy Club in Pretoria, little did I know that my life was about to change,”

Kwa-Thema – Comedian Themba Nhlapo, famously known as Jazzbuda Themb, defeated cancer and continues to entertain his fans. The 47-year-old comedian has been in the entertainment industry for over a decade.

His career as a comedian started 13 years ago. It is blooming and he has shared the stage with the likes of Skhumba Hlophe, Mashabela Galane, Trevor Gumbo, Celeste Ntuli and many more.

Speaking to African Reporter, Themba said he remembers the day he started his comedy career.

“It was November 2009 when I walked into a comedy club in Pretoria. Little did I know that my life was about to change.”

He said he delivered the worst act of his career, but he kept going because he believed he was funny.

Themba is the host, DJ and face of Ekurhuleni Comedy & Soul, which holds comedy and soul sessions at different locations and venues around Ekurhuleni.

“I ran comedy shows in Heidelberg and Centurion for more than five years, giving an opportunity to up-and-coming comedians,” he said.

He said his comic career came to an abrupt end in 2018 after he was diagnosed with stage four lymphoma, a cancer of the lymphatic system, and lost his mother to breast cancer.

Themba said the doctors informed him that his cancer has spread to his bone marrow and the chemotherapy was no longer working, so he was sent home.

“Oncologists felt that my white blood cells were getting weak as chemo dosage was weakening them and a call for a reduced dosage was made.

“I was discharged and was advised to go home, and not in so many words, but to wait for my demise,” he added.

He said that his strong belief in God and the impossible made him ask for the documentation at the hospital so he could obtain a second opinion on his cancer.

“At an oncology centre, the documents were taken and scans were made to determine the extent of cancer, and to my surprise I was cancer-free,” said Themba.

He added that it was confirmed three times that he does not have cancer anymore. On September 2, Themba will be hosting a one-man show called Testimony at Emperor Palace.
