Umlengelenge for all children in the street

A Good Samaritan treats children to ‘umlengelenge’.

Kwa-Thema – A Good Samaritan said children should play on a full stomach. Mziuvumile ‘Umlengelenge’ Swukamisa was spotted giving children umlengelenge (hot dogs) and juice on July 16.

He said children often forgot to eat when they played and sometimes did not want to go home because they might not return to play with their friends.

Swukamisa is a small business operator who sells ‘umlengelenge’ outside the Bahama Club on the corner of Marule and Kgaswane streets.

“The children’s parents and relatives are my biggest supporters because they buy ‘umlengelenge’ from me while having fun at the pub. Giving the children ‘umlengelenge’ is a small token of appreciation,” he said.

He’s done this for two weeks but had formerly given the children fruits, sweets and snacks. Swukamisa said after he started to give the children sweets, he found them waiting for him when he got to his corner to set up.

“They would tell their friends I give away sweets. That’s when I started giving out fruit, and now I give out ‘umlengelenge’,” he said.

Swukamisa said he was overwhelmed by the love he received from the children.

“I love children a lot and, in future, would like to start a homework academy where we would check children’s homework books to see if they were up to date and also help them with homework,” he said.
