Drug addicts killed in Duduza

The attackers went on to assault addicts demanding that they show them where they buy drugs and provide the names of their dealers.

Scores of drug addicts were assaulted in the early hours of Saturday morning. It is alleged three addicts succumbed to their injuries on Saturday.

The number has since risen to five while others are fighting for their lives in hospital.

The victims were allegedly attacked by members of a group formed in response to the high rate of hijackings, drug dealers and other forms of crime in the area.

One of those who died is Prince Molefe, whose body was found near Catch-up Zone. Other bodies with similar injuries were found in various parts of the section.

It is alleged during their raid, the attackers went on to assault addicts demanding that they show them where they buy drugs and provide the names of their dealers.

Popo’s grieving mother said the postmortem report showed that he had a cracked skull and broken limbs.

“On Saturday morning we were called to the scene to identify his body. My son was killed like an animal.

“Though he was an addict, he didn’t deserve to die like that. He wasn’t stealing from anyone but worked at a local tavern to feed his addiction,” she said.

The mother believes that her son’s life would have been spared had he stayed at an initiation school were he was a teacher.

“He left on Wednesday afternoon to the bushes and only returned in the early hours of Saturday morning. His bicycle was in the yard and it looked like he was cleaning his outside room before he went to get a fix,” she added.

A recovering victim, who asked not to be named, said the mob forced entry in his home demanding to know where drugs are bought.

“They took turns assaulting us. I thought I was going to die at their hands. They were angry and militant in their approach demanding that we do push-ups, “he said.

Ekurhuleni SAPS spokesperson Captain Neldah Sekgobela confirmed that they are investigating inquests and assault cases.

“The suspects are yet to be arrested and police investigations are underway, “she said.
