Man arrested for possession of fraudulent documents

The man was nabbed after EMPD officers received a tip-off.

Tsakani – EMPD Community Liaison Unit officers arrested a 41-year-old foreign national on Tuesday morning for possession of fraudulent documents.

According to EMPD spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Kelebogile Thepa, officers followed up on information received about a man selling asylum documents at an internet café and proceeded to the address at Black and Nquthu roads in Langaville.

They discovered multiple fraudulent documents, such as temporary asylum seeker forms, birth certificates and doctors’ notes.

“The suspect alleges that he is the middleman in selling these documents and that he has never met the person who produces the documents, he speaks to his supplier only over the phone, stating that he only meets the applicants,” said Thepa.

Multiple fraudulent documents were found in the man’s possession.

“The suspect further explained that customers would come and make copies of their medical certificates and he would keep a few copies for himself.

“In addition, fraudulent birth certificates belonging to him and his brother were also found on the premises. The suspect alleges he was waiting to make money so that he can make a fraudulent South African identity document at the cost of R12 000.”

The man was arrested and detained for possession of fraudulent documents at the Tsakani Police Station and is expected to appear before the Tsakani Magistrate’s Court soon.

He is facing further charges under the Immigration Act (Act 13 of 2002). Investigations are ongoing to root out all the role players involved.
