Gugulethu man shot, killed by police

The man was shot after attacking a police officer.

A 35-year-old man was shot and killed by the Springs police in Gugulethu informal settlement on Monday night.

Police were responding to a report of domestic violence and the suspect attempted to evade arrest by assaulting one of the two officers and disarming him of his service pistol.

Springs SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Themba Tshabalala said the second officer immediately opened fire on the suspect, shooting him in his upper body.

“The suspect ran into the family shack, where he collapsed and was later certified dead. He was shot in the right side of his stomach with no exit wound,” added Tshabalala.

The suspect was on the run from the Eastern Cape police where he faced charges of rape. The man’s family told African Reporter he was a drug user.

Tshabalala confirmed that police are investigating a case of assault of a police officer and theft. They have opened an inquest into the man’s death.
