Kwa-Thema bus driver to help athletes qualify for marathons

Athlete to make sure that runners reach the finish line.

Kwa-Thema – Sibusiso Mthembu from Kwa-Thema has been selected as one of the official pacemakers for a 42km run in the Edenvale Marathon which will take place on February 26.

As a pacemaker, he is expected to lead long-distance race for the first section to ensure a fast time and avoid excessive tactical racing.

The Edenvale 42km Marathon is one of the races that are set to help runners who would like to participate in the Comrades and the Two Oceans marathons to qualify.

Mthembu said he has always wanted to be a leader in a race to help encourage other runners to complete the races on time.

“I have been preparing for this opportunity for a long time and now that it is finally here I will ensure that many of the runners complete the race on time.

“Most runners are now either slow or unfit so as a pacemaker it is my responsibility to help them reach the 42km mark in 04:50:00,” said Mthembu.

Mthembu started running in 2012 with a 10km run at the Soweto Marathon and started taking part in ultra-marathons in 2015 and has never looked back.

“After Covid-19, a lot of drivers retired and there is a shortage of pacemakers, however, I’m grateful that I’ll be one of those pushing runners to the finish line,” said Mthembu.
