Municipal worker arrested for driving under the influence

The city condemns any and all criminal activities.

A 36-year-old male municipal worker was arrested for reckless and negligent driving and operating a vehicle on a public road while under the influence of an intoxicating substance, on Monday.

EMPD officers noticed that a Nissan Cabstar municipal truck had failed to stop at a stop sign on Nhlengethwa Street, Kwa-Thema.

EMPD spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Kelebogile Thepa detailed the events leading to the arrest.

“The officers stopped the driver, curious to see if the employee needed assistance as there could be an emergency,” said Thepa.

The officers then questioned him and asked him for reasons for disregarding the road sign.

“A strong odour met the officers from the outside and the driver had bloodshot eyes. Those were reasonable grounds to believe he had consumed alcohol,” she added.

A breathalyser test was conducted, and the driver was found to be over the legal alcohol limit prescribed by law.

He was immediately arrested and taken to the hospital to have his blood samples drawn. He has since been detained at Springs SAPS.

“The city has a zero tolerance on lawbreakers, and those upholding the law in the city are expected to follow suit.

“We commend the outstanding work by the officers as such resources are intended for service delivery and can never be instruments in the commission of a crime,” declared Thepa.
