Senior citizens treated to lunch and soup by committee

Soup and lunch for senior citizens.

Kwa-Thema – The community committee of the Deep Level section in Kwa-Thema took time to spoil their senior citizens with soup and lunch on Tuesday.

Committee chairperson Elizabeth Mkhwebane explained why they are spoiling the seniors.

“We are here to thank God for life. We haven’t seen each other since 2019 and it was all due to the pandemic, amongst other problems we faced, however, we survived and are still here,” said Mkhwebane.

Mkhwebane also thanked God for the rain.

“This rain means blessings and we are blessed to be alive,” said Mkhebane.

One of the senior’s in attendance, Emma Mashinini said: “This is a soul-strengthening programme, though we’ve grown we still learn a lot from such programmes, able to speak to each other and help while advising others.

“I’m grateful for this day.”

One of the speakers of the day who is a retired nurse, Thoko Nkomo said: “Ontanga bami (my age mates) we are still here and have reached this stage because we used to listen to our parents.”

Nkomo said the first school one attends is at home.

“We start teaching our children from pregnancy when we bond with them, therefore they should know when and when not to do some things.

“Now there is a democracy, our children must know that there is no democracy in the house, ‘kwaNkomo kulandelwa imithetho ya kwaNkomo (in the Nkomo household we follow Nkomo rules)’ not democracy,” said Nkomo.

Nkomo said the other rules that must be taught at home are asking, forgiveness, respect and thankfulness.

“We as seniors must take it upon ourselves to sit teenagers down. They now fall pregnant at an early age, we should take it upon ourselves to make them aware of the dangers of that,” concluded Nkomo.
