Metro cleans up its act – starts with dumpsites

"The City once again apologises profusely for the inconvenience caused in the past couple of weeks and can assure residents that we are committed to avoiding similar discrepancies going forward."

The clean-up of the dumping sites around Springs started on November 7. Residents can now breathe a sigh of relief as their cries of frustration have been heard.

This initiative is welcomed as time has passed since the dumping sites were last attended to.

The metro acknowledged a backlog when it came to waste management and vowed to sort out the dumpsites.

“The Springs waste management depot is making arrangements to remove the waste and to collect all the excess waste around the facility. The work is expected to resume within a week,” said the municipality in a statement.

Piles of rubbish and waste had overfilled and spilt over into public spaces.

“We are so glad that there is progress. I just hope they keep up with the cleaning and the place stays neat,” said Daggafontein resident Lerato Mavimbela.

Mazweni Dlamini and Ernest Nkambule from solid waste management in Nigel hope to be done cleaning the outskirts of the Daggafontein dumpsite by the end of the week.

“When we are done here, we head over to the New Era site to start cleaning there as well,” said Dlamini.
