Botched hijacking lands suspect in hospital

Informal trader survives an attempted hijacking.

Duduza – A 28-year-old man is under police guard in hospital after he was apprehended by the community following an attempted hijacking on Monday.

It is alleged that the owner of a Nissan 1400 bakkie, who is also a street vendor, was driving along the R550 Road in Tsakane Ext 22 when he was flagged down by three men who were hitchhiking along the road.

The trio hopped into the vehicle, immediately pulled out a firearm and pointed it at him. He was instructed to drive to Duduza.

The driver saw an opportunity and drove his bakkie into a big rock along Lekope Street.

Duduza police spokesperson Sergeant Harry Manaka said the hijackers were frightened by this and jumped out and fled on foot.

“One of the suspects was left trapped inside the bakkie. The owner alerted residents who responded by apprehending the suspect.

“The man sustained serious injuries and had to receive medical attention under police guard,” he explained.
