Elders and disabled in the spotlight

Local elders and the disabled were encouraged to lead a healthy lifestyle.

Kwa-Thema- Over 200 people living with disabilities and the elderly were screened during a disability awareness campaign held at the Kwa-Thema Old Age Home recently.

Health practitioners shared some of the health benefits at the disability awareness campaign.

The event was aimed at educating the group about the importance of taking care of their health and leading a healthy lifestyle.
ActionSA national chairperson for disabilities Arnold Maleka, who also lives with a disability, said he has his purpose in life through living with a disability.
He is blind in the right eye, has an artificial eye, and is short-sighted on the left.

“It is sad that people with disabilities have been exploited over the years but through this fight, we will be able to change the stereotypes.
“I educate residents about being kind to one another and through this, they will be more kind to people with disabilities,” he explained.
Chaps NGO, DC Leader Dolly, encouraged medical male circumcision.
Some of the health benefits of male circumcision include reducing the man’s risk of acquiring HIV infection by 50% to 60% during sex with HIV-infected female partners.
