Cricket fraternity mourns the loss of one of their own

Cricketer Gugulethu 'Guguwane' Khumalo (15) died on August 19 at her home in Duduza.

Duduza – The cricket community is mourning the death of cricketer Gugulethu ‘Guguwane’ Khumalo (15), born on August 13, 2007, who died on August 19.
She started playing cricket at the age of nine when she joined the Duduza Cricket Club/Hub as an all-rounder.
At the age of 13, she was selected for the Easterns cricket team where she played as an all-rounder before becoming a wicketkeeper.

Gugulethu ‘Guguwane’ Khumalo was passionate about cricket.

Before her passing, she had made it to the U17 provincial team as an all-rounder.
Gugulethu attended James Nkosi Primary School before progressing to Esibonelwesihle High School where she was in Grade Nine.
Her sister Sonto Khumalo described her as a bubbly person who was always cheerful.

“She was a people’s person, a talkative someone who loved to dance.
“Her favourite things in the world were cricket, dancing and listening to house music.
“I have lost my best friend who will be dearly missed,” said Sonto.
During the last season, she scored 58 runs making her the highest scorer in the school’s tournament.
The hub said her biggest dream was to play at the provincial tournament.
Assistant coach Pheello Phadime said the hub has lost a fearless player.
“She was always eager to learn and you could see the hunger for success in her eyes. Never has she been the one to undermine herself due to age when playing against older players.
“She always gave her all and would sometimes cry if she didn’t catch a wicket.
“We have lost a real one, our Gugu’licious will be missed immensely,” said Phadime.
She will be laid to rest on Saturday. The service will take place at Duduza Resource Centre from 11:00 until 13:00.
