Parolees assist with clean-up campaign at the Kwa-Thema Old Age Home

Mass clean-up campaign leaves old age home looking great.

Kwa-Thema – Benoni Community Corrections, in conjunction with the Nigel Department of Correctional Services, spent last Thursday morning cleaning the yard and garden of the Kwa-Thema Old Age Home.
Unit manager for Benoni Community Corrections Esther Magagula said community work helps keep parolees off the streets.

“Our mass cleaning is for the elderly since they have such a big garden and it had been raining non-stop.
“We then gathered our parolees to conduct a community service campaign.
“This is also good for our parolees as it integrates them back into society, keeps them busy and off the streets,” she explained.

She added that for community outreach programmes such as this one, they first need to consider the nature of the crime a parolee was convicted for before allocating them.
Head of Nigel Community Corrections Katiso Rantlha said the idea was to clean up the centre before the Easter holidays.
“This joint cleaning campaign is to ensure our elders have a beautiful Easter in a clean environment.
“Community service is also one of the conditions given to parolees by the courts so it is then up to us to ensure they adhere to those as instructed.
“We then said let’s come together to assist the centre, as there is a need, and we also have people who are not only willing but are also required to do community service,” said Rantlha.
