Springs schools fight to maintain pass rates

The class of 2020 fought through unusual circumstances to maintain a good pass rate in Springs schools, even though there is a slight decrease from the previous year.

Many matric learners breathed a sigh of relief as they collected their matric results on Wednesday morning, after a challenging academic year.

Springs Muslim School retained their 100 per cent pass rate.
For the 13th consecutive year, the school has maintained this exceptional result.

“We are grateful that despite the challenges of the 2020 school year we did well.
“I want to congratulate the learners for their hard work, and the teachers who put in their best efforts, as well as the parents and community that supported us,” said principal Mohammed Asvat.
Ninety-one per cent of the learners at the school achieved a bachelor’s degree admission.
Springs Girls High School experienced a slight drop from 99.3 per cent in 2019 to 98.7 per cent in 2020.
The 153 girls who sat for the exam achieved 88 distinctions.

Springs Boys High School increased their pass rate from 97.1 per cent in 2019 to 97.4 per cent.
They achieved 54.4 per cent bachelor passes and 35.1 per cent diploma admissions.
Hoërskool Hugenote learners excelled and the school boasted a pass rate of 95.8 per cent.
Additionally, 75.54 per cent of the learners qualified for a bachelors degree, 21.7 per cent for a diploma and 2.7 per cent for a certificate.

“It’s a very good result, they worked hard and the results are amazing,” said principal Frans Styger
Ninety-four per cent of the 179 learners who wrote their NSC exams at Dr Johan Jurgens High School passed.
The school also experienced a slight drop from their 100 per cent pass rate achieved in 2019.
Hoërskool Dr WK du Plessis enjoyed a 93 per cent pass rate and 50 per cent of the learners qualified for tertiary education.
Deputy principal Etienne Slies said he was very proud of all his learners.
Springs Secondary School dropped from 90.4 per cent in 2019 to 89.34 per cent for 2020, but principal Kishan Bodalina said it is not all doom and gloom.
“I am excited by the quality of passes and distinctions from the learners.
“It is discouraging to note the number of learners that are progressed from Grade 11 because those numbers affect our matric pass rate,” he explained.
On Tuesday, Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga announced the national matric pass rate for the Class of 2020 was 76.2 per cent with a 5.1 per cent drop from the previous year.
