Man sentenced for perjury after lying about hijacking

Former security guard convicted of perjury

The Springs Magistrate’s Court convicted a 37-year-old man for perjury last Wednesday after he lied about being hijacked.
The former security guard, who was an employee of Bidvest, claimed he was robbed of the company vehicle in which he was travelling by three men on Rietfontein Road on July 2.
The vehicle was a white Datsun Go and the man told police the hijackers were wearing balaclavas.

A case docket was opened the same day and assigned to the Trio Task Team for investigation.
The team then received information about a white Datsun Go involved in an accident on Springs Road.
The vehicle had rolled into a ditch on the side of the road and a firearm was found inside.
After the investigating officer visited the scene, a case of perjury was opened against the man and he was arrested.
It was later established he was under the influence of alcohol during the accident.

The suspect appeared in the Springs Magistrate’s Court last Monday and pleaded guilty to charges of perjury.
He was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment, suspended for five years, on condition he does not commit the same offence within the time period.
Station commander of Springs SAPS Brig Thembeka Gwebushe applauded the investigating officer for his efforts in solving the case and warned that people must refrain from reporting false cases and abusing state resources.
