Community called on to protect schools from vandals

MEC Panyaza Lesufi calls on community to law enforcement crack down on criminals who are vandalising and robbing schools.

MEC for Education in Gauteng Panyaza Lesufi has expressed his horror at the recent break-ins and vandalism of schools during the lockdown.

In the statement, the department says it has witnessed about 21 criminal activities in the past two weeks.

It is, however, worth noting that similar incidents occur over normal school holidays.

Schools become soft targets due to quietness and lack of activity on the premises.

Valuable equipment and groceries have been stolen, while some schools were torched.

Tlakula Secondary School, in KwaThema, was on the MEC’s list of affected schools.

Sgt Harry Manaka, communications officer for Duduza Police Station, has confirmed that, so far, no school in Duduza has reported a break-in or vandalism.

He says the SAPS stays in constant contact with principals to make it easy to report any criminal activity.
