Losing Lerato wins big in Califonia

Last week the South African movie not only received six awards, it was also selected to screen at the festival.

The Losing Lerato crew had a successful trip to Los Angeles.

They travelled 33 hours to make it to the Idyllwild International Festival of Cinema in Idyllwild, California.

Last week the South African movie not only received six awards, it was also selected to screen at the festival.

Shot in Ekurhuleni, the film puts the spotlight on one of the topics society often shies away from.

Kagiso Modupe, the executive producer, plays the role of Thami, a man who is denied access to his daughter when he fails to contribute financially to her well-being.

“I’m excited that my work is recognised internationally.

“It’s just that locally the politics have gotten into our industry,” says Modupe.

He believes the movie deserves nominations at the South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTAS), but it was not independently funded.

This did not dampen his, or that of the crew’s, mood.

The cast includes the likes of Connie Chiume, Xolani Jwaga, Nolo Phiri and Don Mlangeni.
