Last month the old executive succumbed to pressure and stepped down to make way for the election of the new executive.

Ahead of these elections three taxi bosses were executed in a hail of bullets within a period of three weeks.

Under high police and private security presence the elections were held at Faranani Multi-purpose Centre.

The newly elected secretary Dan Masango says they are happy with how the elections were conducted because they were free and fair with no violence.

“We had Santaco, Santaco Ekurhuleni, Gauteng Department of Transport and other stakeholders overseeing the process of the elections.

“Some of the criteria to participate in the elections were for a candidate to be an owner of a taxi and have an official operating permit from the association.

“We decided to hold a secret ballot in both the nomination and elective process unlike in the previous years where members raised their hands to vote.

“This allowed for members not to feel threatened in electing their preferred candidates.

“We are currently going through the hand-over process and putting our ducks in a row to ensure that the office is run smoothly moving forward.

“We have identified that one of the causes of the previous infighting were the unfair process which favoured other members over others and corruption and we are going to root out that culture,” he adds.

The newly elected executive include: chairperson, Jabula Motha, deputy chairperson Lydia Motlogelo, secretary Dan Masango, deputy secretary Nomsa Sambo, treasurer Sipho Shikwambane, PRO Lucky Skhosana, grievance chairperson Themba Mkhwanazi, and disciplinary committee Mike Ntsibande.
