Pholosong Hospital launches ‘I serve with a smile’ campaign to improve patient treatment

Tsakane – Pholosong Hospital is going beyond their boards to educate other hospitals about better patient treatment, through their ‘I serve with a smile campaign’.

The hospital launched the campaign last year in April, following the appointment of the new CEO, Ashley Mthunzi.

“I serve with a smile campaign was started by us at Pholosong Hospital last year in April as a response strategy to a number of complaints we were getting emanating from staff attitude.

“Ninety per cent of our complaints were due to staff attitude; therefore, we had to be intentional about addressing staff attitude.

“Our employees have responded positively to the campaign and we have been receiving positive feedback from our patients,” says Mthunzi.

The campaign consists of three phases, which is the introduction phase, followed by the pledge and budge phase then the induction into the wall of fame.

Pholosong Hospital prides itself on treating patients with care and providing effective service.

“The induction phase is where we teach our staff how to treat patients, and employees who excel in this area are then identified by other employees and get nominated. They then sign the pledge and receive a badge and a T-shirt as a symbol of their commitment and patients can easily identify them,” says Mthunzi.

The hospital on Tuesday had a presentation with Bertha Gxowa Hospital staff members to brief them about the campaign.

“The campaign has received positive feedback from our head offices and they want us to help other hospitals to implement it.

“This is something we are proud of because we are the first hospital to have such a campaign and it has made a major difference to our staff and patients,” he adds.

Mthunzi seems to be leading by example as he rolled up his sleeves on Monday, assisting patients at the causality ward.

“Being in management isn’t only about implementing strategies but also getting in touch with the people, leading by example and engaging.

“I love what I do and helping people is something I am very passionate about and champion for,” he says.
