Local runners to compete to qualify for the Comrades

“We have a total of 16 female runners and seven are hoping to qualify for the 2020 Comrades Marathon because this is one of the most important marathons on our diary.”

KwaThema – Hundreds of local long and short-distance runners participated in the annual KwaThema Striders Athletic Club opening run to welcome and induct all new members to the club.

The race also aims at preparing the runners for the 2020 running calendar.

On Sunday, the team will see 50 runners participating in the Johnson Crane Marathon which will be held at Willmoore Park Stadium in Benoni.

Tshepo Mahlangu, team secretary, says they are proud to see more women developing an interest and registering to participate in the marathon.

“We have a total of 16 female runners and seven are hoping to qualify for the 2020 Comrades Marathon because this is one of the most important marathons on our diary.

“Six of the female runners will be participating in the 42km run, one in 21km and all seven in the Comrades.

“We would like to see more female runners taking interest in the sport and leading a healthy lifestyle.”

“We have a higher number of men this year, with 34 registered, 17 in the 42km race registered for the Comrades and 10 in the 42km race did not register for the Comrades,” he says.

Mahlangu is encouraging more residents to join the sport.
