Social media bullying is wrong

If I may ask, do we ever think about our actions on social media, especially how they might affect the next person, or do we do as we please for a good laugh and wait until someone points it out?

In recent months, I have seen a lot of people putting on their charity hats and helping the less fortunate across the country.

I am not sure if it has always been this way or whether we are only exposed to the magnitude now because of social media and modern technology which allows us to have access to people across the globe.

A week ago when schools re-opened, a picture of a little who looked like she was in Grade One from Eastern Cape dressed in an over-sized school uniform was in circulation on social media.

The first thing that crossed my mind when I saw the picture was that an adult (I mean think about it, what are the odds of a Grade One learner having a phone in class) wanted to make fun of the girl on social media.

The adult got too excited on the first day of school and thought wow, this might just make for a good laugh by discrediting the parents for failing to buy the child a school uniform her size without considering the long-term effect on the child.

While still on this subject, this is not different from the KFC couple proposal because that video was shared on social media to mock the groom for being a cheapskate for proposing at the KFC restaurant.

If I may ask, do we ever think about our actions on social media, especially how they might affect the next person, or do we do as we please for a good laugh and wait until someone points it out?

Anyway, I am happy that someone on the teacher’s timeline picked up the wrong part of the post and defended the girl’s dignity and that of the couple even many more.

We saw business people across the country offering to help by buying the little girl a new school uniform, groceries and improving her living conditions.

I am happy that South Africans joined hands and helped to throw a lavish dream wedding for the KFC couple, something they could not afford.

It really is heart-warming to see ordinary citizens standing up and defending others and lending a helping hand where they can.
