Single parents should not be afraid to ask for help, church says as it donates school shoes

Organiser Lorraine Emelda says she was inspired by her personal struggles as a single mother to give back and support other parents who are going through a similar situation.

Tsakane – Women Youth Prayer Community Empowerment under the International Fire Ministry Church on Monday donated 20 pairs of school shoes to Mangosuthu Primary School.

Organiser Lorraine Emelda says she was inspired by her personal struggles as a single mother to give back and support other parents who are going through a similar situation.

“The idea came to me through a prayer which made me reflect on my own past experience as a single mother, who was forced to raise her three children by her own.

“The learners who we are giving these shoes to are learners from households headed by single parents and in need,” says Emelda.

She adds that single parents should not be afraid to ask for help.

“I would like to encourage parents who are struggling to never shy away from asking for help. I have managed to put my children to university through help I have found from my own community and church.

“There is always light at the end of the tunnel,” she explains.

A mother of an eight-year-old learner, Blessing Dube, says: “I am extremely happy for my child and thankful to the organisation for the donation and also powerful message we received here today.”

School principal Lemson Mashego says the donations will make a huge difference in the lives of the learners.

“I am grateful that they chose us, such initiatives are very important because they are addressing the social economic circumstances that we are faced with as a school.

“I believe that the selected learners’ academics will improve immensely and that the shoes will boost their confidence,” says Mashego.
