MEC for Finance and e-Government encourages learners to be focused

“We are not happy that the school had a 75.6% pass rate in the National Senior Certificate exams, a drop from the 86.5% in 2018.

KwaThema – Gauteng MEC for Finance and e-Government Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko encouraged learners from Phulong Secondary School to remain focused as they chase their dreams.

The MEC was speaking during her visit to the school on Wednesday morning.

Gauteng MEC for Finance and e-Government Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko handed out school shoes to learners from disadvantaged backgrounds at Phulong Secondary School.

This was part of the It’s All Systems Go for Gauteng Schools initiative led by Gauteng Premier David Makhura and other members of the executive council.

The initiative is aimed at visiting schools across the province to ensure teaching and learning commences and to identify that all the schools’ needs are identified and delivered on.

Nkomo-Ralehoko told the learners to work with them to help improve their lives.

“You should not be discouraged by the poor background that you were born in, nothing lasts forever.

“Most of the people you see today occupying important positions were once in your situation, but because they knew what they wanted out of life they kept their eyes on their goal.

“As government, we are here to support you and ensure you achieve those goals.

“Don’t allow bullies and gangs to destroy your self-esteem, stay away from drugs or anything that will deter you from achieving your goals,” she says.

Gauteng MEC for Finance and e-Government Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko with Phulong Secondary School principal Jabulani Nyoni motivated learners on their first day in school.

The MEC promised to deliver smart-boards, improve Wi-Fi connection at the school and other needs during the course of the year.

“We are urging the school and parents to ensure theses things aren’t stolen.

“We are not happy that the school had a 75.6% pass rate in the National Senior Certificate exams, a drop from the 86.5% in 2018.

“As the government, we want to see all the schools in the province performing above 80%, especially obtaining a 100% pass rate,” she says.

Clr Zweli Yende urged the learners to report any form of abuse and crime to the police.

“ No one should intimidate you into doing something that you are not comfortable with.

“If you feel that it is against the morals and principles that you were taught report them.

“We want to see leaders, doctors and other important members of the community coming out of this school,” he adds.
