Tsakane – Tsakane Sport Academy is uplifting the community of Extension 12 by making sure people have food.

The organisation has teamed up with Vukani Bafazi farmers to educate the community about farming and food security.

Founder of the organisation Samson Ndlovu says farming is important to safeguard and root out food imbalances.

“The partnership was much needed because many people are unemployed and our youth are faced with alcoholism and drug abuse.

“What we aim to achieve is to encourage more people, including the youth, to partake in farming,” says Ndlovu.

He says through farming he believes they can fight poverty and it is a great way of keeping the youth and children off the streets.

“Including young people in such initiatives, I believe, will make a great contribution to our society.

“They get to learn new skills and interact with our senior citizens.

“This project will have many benefits for the people of Tsakane and it will ensure no one goes to bed hungry,” he explains.

To encourage farmers and community members to keep on farming, the organisation is running competitions and will select four winners in January.

Two will be from the Vukani Bafazi farmers and the other two will be residents who have started farming in their own yards.

Resident Emma Mokowana (72) says she has been farming for four years.

“People undermine farming, but I would encourage everyone to start farming, even if it’s a small garden in your backyard.

“I have been saving money because I do not have to buy things like vegetables and my family gets to eat healthy meals on a daily basis,” says Mokowana.
