Local clinic is encouraging men to attend wellness day

Men aged from 21 are encouraged to use public health facilities available to them to check their health.

KwaThema – The KwaThema clinic held a men’s health awareness day on November 23, at the KwaThema Clinic.

The purpose of the event was to provide free wellness check-ups, screening, high blood pressure, sugar diabetes, cholesterol and prostate cancer (PSA).

Men aged from 21 and older are encouraged to use public health facilities available to them to check their health.

Unit manager Thembi Mgidi says men should not be shy or feel discouraged to seek health assistance at the clinic.

“We work with selected clerks and professional nurses to ensure that each and every patient who attends feels special and they get proper and quality service.

Our challenge is that people do not want to make use of such health services being offered to them, some are scared and so forth.”

She further explains that operating hours for these services are controlled by the number of turnout from the public.

“For now we do the programme once a month from 7am to 1pm.

The more turnout we have the better chances we have to increase the number of days in a month, the programme runs and also extend the hours on those days.

Hence we are pleading with the public to not shy away from clinics and to attend,” says Mgidi.

They also offer Body Mass Index (BMI) check-ups to assess whether the person is obese, overweight or suffering from malnutrition.

CanSurvivor, Director, Ronnie Nkabinde says: “It is important for us men to strive to a healthy lifestyle and learn to take care of ourselves. Events like this are important because they are highly educative and you receive free medical care.

Normally people wait until it’s too late to seek medical help which is wrong.”

The programme is usually held on Saturdays to accommodate men who are not able to visit during weekdays, due to work commitments. The next upcoming programme will take place on December 21, at the clinic from 7am to 1pm.
