Learners from Tsakane learn about oral history and heritage

The aim of the event was to educate the community and school learners about oral history.

Tsakane – The Gauteng Provincial Archives, in partnership with the Brakpan Museum non-profit company (NPC), held an oral history event on October 25 at the Tsakane Hall to celebrate 100 years of Brakpan.

The aim of the event was to educate the community and school learners about oral history.

Organiser and director of the Brakpan Museum Vikinduku Mkhonza says people lack knowledge about oral history and its importance and how to use archives. That is why the Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation in Gauteng is touring the province to educate the public.

The community learnt about oral history, how to collect and document oral history, how to use archives, the preservation of oral heritage by community members and introducing archives to the marginalised communities.

Mkhonza says they elected three secondary schools from Tsakane because of the history behind these schools.

“We took 20 learners from each of the following schools: Tsakane Senior Secondary School, Mamellong Comprehensive Secondary School and Malepe High School.

“The reason we wanted to work with these schools is that they are historically connected, and history and heritage is very important as it teaches us where we come from,” says Mkhonza.
