Locals stage protest to demand speed humps

“We will keep the roads closed until our grievances are addressed,” she adds.

KwaThema – Residents of White City blocked all the entrances and main roads into the area as they demanded that speed humps be installed on their inner roads.

The silent protest, which lasted from Thursday to Saturday, saw the roads blocked off with big rocks and refuse bins.

Resident Sibongile Mtshweni says they are concerned about the safety of their children on these roads.

“Motorists do not respect the stop signs or other road users, especially the children.

“They drive at high speed without a care in the world and put our lives in danger.

“We have been pleading with different ward councillors to install speed humps for years, but nothing has come of it,” she says.

Another concerned resident, Thando Ndala, says as the community they have been pleading with their ward councillor to help install the speed humps.

“We decided to take it to the streets because we are tired of talking.

“This government only listens when we take extreme measures.

“We will keep the roads closed until our grievances are addressed,” she adds.

Ward 79 councillor Zwelibanzi Ngwenya says he has received a promise from the Department of Roads and Transport that they will start working on the identified roads on Friday.

“It is true that as the community of White City we have been applying for the speed humps since 2016 when I took office.

“On Saturday we reached an agreement with the community that they will continue protesting until they see the speed humps,” he adds.
