Local cross-country runner crowned national champion

“We wish a local running club would adopt him in order to help groom his talent."

Duduza – Cross-country athlete Samkelo Mosito has been crowned as the champion at the National Cross-Country Championship in White River, Mpumalanga, on Saturday.

The 13-year-old from Sizwesethu Primary School started running in national championships three years ago, but always finished within the top five.

But this year he finished first.

Coach Nhlanhla Khumalo says they worked very hard this year towards improving his position in the competition.

“We trained twice a day to ensure he is ready for the competition.

“We identified his weaknesses and worked on them; fortunately for us the changes worked to his advantage and he is now a national champion,” he said.

Sizwesethu Primary principal Vusimuzi Gule says they are proud of the young runner for flying the school name high.

“We have always believed in his talent and knew he would one day make it to the top position.

“We wish a local running club would adopt him in order to help groom his talent.

“We believe in his talent and know he would do even better if he is trained professionally.

“We want to see him competing in international competitions and one day earn a living through this sport,” he adds.
